HANSATON answers the most frequently asked questions regarding better hearing.

How would I notice if my hearing has deteriorated?
There are a couple of unmistakable signs that you can look out for. For example, when having a conversation amid background noise, you need to concentrate more than usual on what the other person is saying. Other people think that the volume on your television or your stereo is too loud. Or people ask you to speak more softly on the phone. Or perhaps more tellingly, when out in public you are startled by a car that seems to appear suddenly, because you didn't hear it approaching. If such situations are familiar to you, you should have a hearing test to be on the safe side - either here online or with an audiologist or certified hearing instrument dispenser.

How do I know if I have a hearing loss?
The onset of hearing loss is usually very gradual, so you are unlikely to notice any sudden change. The two most common complaints of people who have developed some loss of hearing are, “I hear people talking, but I sometimes can’t understand what they say,” and, “I can hear fine in a quiet place, but in a noisy room, I have trouble understanding.” In addition to these complaints, family members may complain that your TV or stereo volume is too high, or you may be surprised by a car that appears suddenly because you didn’t hear it coming. If you are noticing such signs, have your hearing tested by an audiogist or hearing instrument dispenser. As a convenient starting point, you can use Hansaton’s online hearing test to help you learn more about your hearing.

Can a person have hearing problems even in their early years?
Of course. Hearing problems are not necessarily a question of (old) age. In general, it is true that hearing capability declines with age; the reason being deterioration of the hair cells in the inner ear. But today, there are more and more young people whose hearing is not what it should be. It is often damaged through chronic noise in their job or through loud music. Hearing loss can be a genetic trait or congenital (born with it) as well.

Where should I turn if I have a hearing problem?
If you notice that your hearing is not as good as it used to be, you should search for an audiologist in your area. He or she can determine the causes and degree of the hearing loss and prescribe the Hansaton hearing system that’s right for you. Should you need to see an ear, nose, and throat physician, an audiologist can make the appropriate referral. You can also go to a hearing instrument specialist and do a free hearing test there. The hearing instrument specialist can help you pick the hearing system most suited to you and match it to your individual requirements.

When it comes to caring for the system and answering any questions you may have, an audiologist or hearing instrument specialist is your professional contact,

Do hearing problems disappear of their own accord?
Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. If the hearing problem appears after a short exposure to very loud noise, it might only be a temporary phenomenon and could disappear after a few days. Even after an acute hearing loss, it is possible that medical treatment can improve the situation. If however the problem is caused by age-related wear or chronic damage caused by long-lasting exposure to noise, the hearing capability can only be improved by the use of one or two hearing systems.

Won't a hearing system make me feel and look older than I am?
In the past, hearing aids were rather larger and unattractive. Modern hearing systems, however, are not only stylish, but often almost invisible. The rapid development in technology and design has meant that more and more people can experience life to the fullest (both at work and in their free time) thanks to the most modern hearing systems.
